About The Company
Solvatten’s History
In 1997 Swedish artist and inventor Petra Wadström lived with her family in sunny Australia, where the under-used potential of solar power triggered an idea. As the family travelled later in Indonesia Petra saw the need for a water purifier that:
- Harnesses the sun’s UV rays for water purification;
- Indicates when the water is safe for drinking;
- Features a container that keeps clean water safe;
- Is easy for anyone to use;
- Can be carried by a child.
Petra Wadström: ”I developed Solvatten after seeing the problems caused by the lack of safe drinking water in Indonesia. I had just spent time in Australia. It took many years and prototypes but eventually the idea was realized. My mission is to provide Solvatten to everyone who has the need for safe water. We believe that we can get Solvatten to the people at ”the base of the pyramid” where Solvatten can transform people’s lives. I strongly believe in self-help so it is important both that we make it affordable and that the users invest in it, so they value Solvatten and take good care of it.”
Following 10 years of research and testing, Solvatten (Sun Water in Swedish) is now being used in controlled studies in Nepal and Kenya, with impressive results. The combined water container, purifier and heater is targeted at the world’s most disadvantaged people – people without access to such basics as electricity and safe drinking water.
Petra explains: ”Solvatten AB was founded in 2006 to develop, market and sell Solvatten. The company’s mission is to provide the most cost-effective and sustainable household water treatment solution for developing countries.”
The company is based in Sweden, where Solvatten is currently produced. The founder, Petra Wadström, is the CEO and she is supported by a board of experts, private investors and internationally experienced staff.
