SOLVATTEN is a portable 10 liter container that is harnessing sunshine to heat and treat water at household level. Put Solvatten in a sunny place, expose it for 2-6 hours and the water will be drinkable. An indicator shows when it is safe to drink. Solvatten can also be used as a solar water heater, providing hot water for cooking and hygiene.
Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the world’s population does not have access to it. As a result there are 1.6 million diarrhoeal deaths every year related to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene – the vast majority among children under five. The UN Millennium Development Goals set out ambitious targets for urgent action to find solutions to these problems. Widespread use of Solvatten can contribute to the realization of seven out of eight of these goals. Let’s get started!
Fueled by the Sun
Around half a billion people heat and treat their water by boiling it, using charcoal, kerosene or firewood. Solvatten is solar powered and can reduce use of these fuels. Once the unit is filled with water it is placed in the sun and the infrared and ultraviolet rays heat and treat the water. The hot water can be used immediately for hygiene and cooking, or cooled in the shade for drinking.
